Art and Auction Catalogs
A MANIFEST FOR THE MOON
The Lunar Codex uses digital and analog technology to preserve art, books, music, and more, enclosed in time capsules and launched to the Moon. It is a message-in-a-bottle to the future.

Curatorial Notes

Contemporary auctions present a mix of both established masters and rising artists for a particular time period. This section spotlights some selected auction catalogues, significantly from the León Gallery in the Philippines, one of the pre-eminent auction houses in Asia. Archiving these catalogues results in the preservation of hundreds of acknowledged master painters, from Fernando Amorsolo to Fernando Zobel.
Several private collections and assemblages are also collected in this section, notably The ARGO Collection. We are grateful to these galleries and collections for permission to represent these works in the Codex.

* Every artist listed below has at least one artwork represented in the Codex, and many have several pieces of art represented.

- Through a career spanning 70 years, Bitanga has become an icon of Philippine art. As a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, she was the Philippines’ premier female abstract artist, and still remains one of its pre-eminent practitioners. As an educator, she has inspired the next generation as Dean of the Institute of Fine Arts and Design of the Philippine Women's University, and as a Consultant in Sculpture at the School of Fine Arts, University of Santo Tomas.
- Her paintings range from miniature expressionistic landscapes, still life compositions, and life studies to mural-sized abstracts depicting arrested motion and light in a form of neo-Cubist Futurism that crosses artistic movements. Her sculptures move from compact bronzes of the human figure to massive installations of tesseracts and polyhedrons. Her works are in public and private collections the world over, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia, the Vatican, Italy, Canada and the United States.
- Bitanga is one of the first woman artists with works to be archived on the Moon – and the single artist with the most artworks to be represented on the lunar surface.
- The full catalogue is only available in a lunar edition for the Polaris collection. A virtual catalogue raisonné of Bitanga's lifetime of work is in the Peregrine, Nova, and Polaris collections of the Lunar Codex.
