PASSENGER NATIONS

1024px-Nasa_earth.jpg
A MANIFEST FROM EARTH

The Lunar Codex collects the works of an estimated 40,000 artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers from all over the world, with an estimated 250,000 individual cultural artifacts in total.

But it is the breadth of representation of Earth as a united community that makes this project unique.

The United Nations counts 193 member states and 2 observer states. The current CIA World FactBook indexes 261 'countries' - but counts among them entries for the European Union, the World, as well as territories, dependencies, and uninhabited islands.

The International Olympic Committee counts as nations those regions with National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including administrative NOCs not officially affiliated with a country, such as those representing athletes when their country is officially not participating in that year's games. For the Paris 2024 Games they numbered 206 nations.

By any of these measures,
the Lunar Codex has become, over its five-year collection phase, one of the most truly global cultural heritage projects of its kind, with curated work representing 259 countries and territories, and 147 Indigenous nations.

Countries & Territories

The totals above are based on representative work from 201 countries & 58 territories, and an additional  147 Indigenous nations, mostly from North America.

The Lunar Codex also includes artists from every U.S. state, and from every Canadian province and territory.

We are happy to provide contacts for those looking to profile creative artists from any of these regions.

Indigenous Nations

The Lunar Codex acknowledges that it operates on lands which are part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat and Wyandot Nations.

In terms of cultural contribution from Indigenous peoples, the Lunar Codex relied greatly on the Canadian-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) for our core collection, and are grateful for their support.

We also are thankful for the support and encouragement of the estate of the late Norval Morrisseau, dubbed "the Picasso of the North" by Marc Chagall and the art press. We are also grateful for the support from the Gabriel Dumont Institute, the Kipling Gallery, and many other institutions that focus on the works of Indigenous peoples of North America.

We apologize for any errors, and a lack of understanding of traditional culture and territory, and will rectify any such errors pointed out.

We are happy to provide contacts for those looking to profile participants from any of these Indigenous peoples.

* While the Lunar Codex's current Indigenous contacts cover primarily the North American continent, the United Nations estimates that there are 5000 distinct Indigenous groups in the world. Addressing under-represented groups is a focus for the future, and for our partners, the Interstellar Foundation and the Lunar University. Dr. Peralta sits on the advisory boards of both organizations.
